The Hands of a Servant (Part Two)

Scripture: 1 Peter 4:10
“God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.”
A servant’s heart is where service begins, but a servant’s hands are where that service becomes visible.
Love is more than a feeling. Compassion is more than an emotion. Both are demonstrated through practical acts of kindness, generosity, encouragement, and sacrifice. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus showed us what this looks like. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, welcomed the outcast, comforted the hurting, and met people at their point of need.
As followers of Christ, we are called to follow His example. God has given each of us gifts, abilities, experiences, resources, and opportunities that can be used to bless others. These gifts were not given merely for our own benefit. They were entrusted to us so we could serve one another and bring glory to God.
When we place what we have in God’s hands, even the simplest act of obedience can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. God has not only called us to have a servant’s heart; He has equipped us to become His hands and feet in a world that needs His love.
The question is not whether you have something to offer. The question is whether you are willing to use what God has already placed in your hands.
1. Discover Your Assignment
God has uniquely gifted every believer with abilities and experiences that can be used to serve others. Some serve through teaching, others through encouragement, hospitality, generosity, leadership, prayer, mercy, or practical acts of kindness.
Not every assignment looks the same, and not every act of service receives recognition. Yet, no gift is insignificant when it is used to bless others and honour God.
The temptation to compare ourselves with others can make us overlook the value of our own contribution. We may admire someone else’s platform, influence, or ability while neglecting the opportunity right in front of us.
But God has not called everyone to serve in the same way. He calls each of us to be faithful with what we have been given.
Your assignment may be as simple as encouraging someone who feels discouraged, helping a neighbour, supporting a ministry, sharing your skills, or showing up consistently for someone who needs you.
When you faithfully embrace the opportunities God places before you, your service becomes part of something greater than yourself. The body of Christ is strengthened, lives are touched, and God is glorified.
You do not have to do everything. You simply have to be faithful with what God has entrusted to you.
2. Display Christ’s Love
Service is the Gospel in action.
People may not always remember our words, but they often remember how we treated them. A helping hand, a generous gift, a thoughtful visit, a word of encouragement, or a quiet act of sacrifice can communicate the love of Christ in a powerful way.
Jesus did not merely speak about compassion. He demonstrated it. His love moved Him to meet people where they were, respond to their needs, and treat them with dignity.
In the same way, our service should point beyond us to the One we represent. We are not serving simply to be noticed, praised, or rewarded. We serve because we have received the love of Christ and desire to reflect that love to others.
Matthew 5:16 reminds us:
“In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
Notice the purpose of our good deeds: that people would praise our heavenly Father. Our service should not draw attention to our own greatness but help others see God’s goodness.
This means serving with humility when no one is watching, giving without expecting something in return, and showing kindness even when it is inconvenient. It means recognising that the person in front of us is not an interruption to our faith; they may be the very person God has given us an opportunity to serve.
Every time we serve with genuine love, we create an opportunity for someone to experience a glimpse of God’s grace through us.
Conclusion: Put Your Hands to Work
The hands of a servant are most powerful when they are directed by the heart of Christ.
God has given each of us something we can use to strengthen others, demonstrate His love, and advance His Kingdom. Our gifts may differ, and our opportunities may vary, but the call to serve remains the same.
Do not wait for a grand opportunity to make a difference. Start with what is already in your hands. Look around you. Who needs encouragement? Where can you help? What ability, resource, or opportunity can you use to bless someone today?
As you faithfully serve others, God can work through your actions to touch lives, and He can continue shaping your own heart in the process.
A servant’s heart must eventually become a servant’s action.
So, discover your assignment. Display Christ’s love. And put your hands to work.
May your life be a living reflection of the hands and heart of Jesus Christ.
