Invest in What Lasts (Part One)

Scripture: Matthew 6:19–21

“Don't store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”

Our world constantly encourages us to pursue bigger paychecks, greater possessions, and visible success. There is nothing wrong with working diligently, making progress, or enjoying the blessings God provides. But Jesus reminds us that there is something far more valuable than what we can accumulate in this life.

Earthly possessions are temporary. Wealth can disappear, recognition can fade, and achievements that once seemed significant may eventually be forgotten. But a life invested in God's Kingdom has an eternal purpose.

Every act of obedience, every sacrifice made in faith, every opportunity to serve, and every life touched by the Gospel reflects a commitment to something greater than ourselves. These are not always the things the world celebrates, but they matter to God.

In Matthew 6:19–21, Jesus challenges us to examine not only what we are pursuing but also where our hearts are invested. What we treasure shapes our priorities, influences our decisions, and determines how we spend our lives.

The question is not simply what you are gaining in this life, but what you are investing in that will last beyond it.

If we want to live with eternity in view, we must learn to invest differently. Jesus shows us two important ways to do this.

1. Prioritize Eternal Treasures

Jesus calls us to invest our time, talents, resources, and influence in what matters to God.

An eternal investment is not limited to giving financially or participating in a visible ministry. It can be found in the everyday choices we make to honour God and serve others. It includes praying for someone, encouraging a struggling believer, sharing the Gospel, discipling others, giving generously, and using our abilities to strengthen God's people.

These actions may seem small, and some may never receive public recognition. Yet they reflect a heart that values God's purposes above personal gain.

This also challenges us to examine how we use what God has entrusted to us. Are we investing all our energy in acquiring more, or are we making room to serve, give, encourage, and build others up? Are our gifts being used only for personal advancement, or are they also making a difference in the lives of others?

Seeking God's Kingdom does not mean neglecting our responsibilities or refusing to enjoy His blessings. It means placing those blessings in their proper position and allowing God to guide how we use them.

When we make God's purposes a priority, our lives begin to reflect a different kind of wealth. Instead of measuring success only by what we own, we begin to consider how faithfully we have used what we have been given.

Invest in what honours God, serves others, and advances His Kingdom. These are priorities worthy of your time, energy, and resources.

2. Live With an Eternal Perspective

An eternal perspective changes how we respond to both blessings and hardships.

When our attention is fixed only on earthly rewards, it becomes easy to measure our worth by recognition, possessions, achievements, or the approval of others. We may become discouraged when our efforts go unnoticed or question the value of serving when the results are not immediately visible.

But when we remember that our lives have an eternal purpose, we can remain faithful even when the rewards are not immediate.

Our Heavenly Father sees the obedience that others overlook. He knows the sacrifices made in private, the prayers offered in secret, and the service carried out without applause. We do not need constant recognition to know that a life lived faithfully for God has value.

This perspective also helps us navigate difficult seasons. Hardship may challenge our faith, and progress may take longer than expected, but neither should cause us to abandon what God has called us to do.

First Corinthians 15:58 encourages us:

“So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.”

This is a reminder to remain steadfast. Our service is not meaningless simply because its impact is not immediately apparent. We can continue to pray, give, serve, and obey because our faithfulness is rooted in God, not in the applause or outcomes we receive.

Living with eternity in mind helps us hold earthly success with humility, endure challenges with faith, and use our lives with greater purpose.

When eternity shapes your perspective, faithfulness becomes more important than recognition, and obedience becomes more important than applause.

Conclusion: Invest Where It Matters Most

The greatest rewards are not found in earthly applause or the accumulation of possessions. They are found in a life that honours God and reflects His purposes.

Jesus reminds us that our treasure and our hearts are connected. What we consistently value will influence how we live, what we pursue, and what we are willing to sacrifice for.

So, take a moment to examine your priorities. Where is your time going? What is receiving your greatest attention? Are you using your gifts and resources only to build a life for yourself, or are you also investing in what matters to God?

You do not have to wait until you have more money, more influence, or a greater platform to begin. Start with what God has already placed in your hands. Serve faithfully. Give generously. Encourage others. Remain steadfast in the work He has entrusted to you.

Invest in what lasts. Live with eternity in view. And let the way you spend your life reflect what you truly treasure.

Because when your heart is set on God's Kingdom, your life begins to point toward something far greater than what this world can offer.
