The Barrier of Unbelief (Part One)

Psalm 84:11 – “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”

God’s heart for His children is clear: He withholds no good thing from those who walk in His ways. Yet many believers live far beneath God’s best — not because He denies us, but because we allow barriers to block His promises.

Picture this: a banquet table is set before you, filled with every dish your heart could desire. The host smiles and says, “It’s all yours. Come and eat.” But instead of receiving, you fold your arms and say, “I don’t believe it’s real. I don’t think it will satisfy me. Maybe it will even harm me.” And so, you walk away hungry.

That’s what unbelief does with God’s promises. The feast is ready, but unbelief robs us of the joy of receiving it.

Let’s uncover how unbelief operates and how to break free from this first barrier.

How Unbelief Blocks God’s Best

1. Unbelief distorts our perception.

Faith magnifies God, but unbelief magnifies problems. The Israelites saw giants bigger than their God. They declared: “We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them” (Numbers 13:33). Unbelief will always make obstacles look larger than God’s power.

2. Unbelief delays our progress.

A short journey to the Promised Land became 40 years of wandering because of Israel’s unbelief. “So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief” (Hebrews 3:19). Unbelief doesn’t cancel God’s promises, but it can put them on hold.

3. Unbelief drains our potential.

When the disciples couldn’t cast out a demon, Jesus didn’t fault their knowledge or effort. He said plainly: “Because of your unbelief” (Matthew 17:20). Unbelief keeps us stuck in human effort instead of flowing in divine enablement.

Keys to Overcoming Unbelief

1. Feed on God’s Word.

Faith is born and strengthened by the Word. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing the Good News about Christ” (Romans 10:17). Silence doubt by silencing negative voices and filling your heart with truth.

2. Focus on God’s Character.

Abraham “was fully persuaded that God had power to do what He had promised” (Romans 4:21). The more we meditate on who God is, the easier it becomes to trust what He says.

3. Fight the Good Fight of Faith.

Faith is not passive — it’s active. Speak God’s Word until your heart aligns with your mouth. Push back doubt with declarations of truth.

Final Word

Breaking the barrier of unbelief unlocks a new dimension of possibility. Jesus said, “Everything is possible for one who believes” (Mark 9:23).

The banquet of God’s best is already set before you. Don’t let unbelief keep you hungry. Pull up a chair, take God at His Word, and receive all that He has prepared for you.

We will continue with the next barrier in this series soon.
